Bone Grafting for Dental Implants
in Huntington Beach, CA

Insufficient jawbone doesn't have to disqualify you from dental implants. We perform socket preservation grafts at the time of extraction to prevent bone loss. For significant bone grafting beyond socket preservation — such as ridge augmentation, sinus lifts, or block grafts — we work closely with trusted oral surgeons who specialize in these procedures.

Why Bone Grafting Is Sometimes Needed for Implants

Dental implants require a minimum amount of bone to anchor securely. The titanium post needs to be surrounded by bone on all sides for osseointegration — the fusion process that gives implants their exceptional stability and longevity. When bone volume is insufficient, the implant has no stable foundation, leading to failure.

Bone loss occurs naturally when a tooth is lost and not replaced promptly. The jawbone exists to support tooth roots — when those roots are absent, the body begins resorbing the bone in that area. Within 12 months of extraction, patients can lose up to 25% of bone width and up to 4mm of height. After several years without tooth replacement, this loss becomes significant.

Other causes of bone loss include periodontal (gum) disease, trauma, previous failed implants, and long-term denture wear (which accelerates bone resorption through pressure on the ridge). At Huntington Beach Prosthodontics, we perform socket preservation — the most common type of bone graft, placed at the time of extraction to prevent bone loss. For anything beyond socket preservation (ridge augmentation, sinus lifts, block grafts), we refer patients to trusted oral surgeons and coordinate care for a seamless path to dental implant placement.

Socket Preservation: What We Offer

A socket preservation graft (also called alveolar ridge preservation) is placed immediately into the tooth socket at the time of extraction. It prevents the collapse of the socket walls that otherwise occurs after extraction, preserving bone volume for future implant placement. If you are planning to get an implant after an extraction, requesting socket preservation at the time of extraction is strongly advised.

If your case requires significant bone grafting — such as ridge augmentation, sinus lifts, or block grafts — we will refer you to an oral surgeon who specializes in these procedures. We work closely with our surgical partners to ensure your treatment plan is coordinated and your implant placement proceeds smoothly once healing is complete.

The Socket Preservation Procedure: What to Expect

Socket preservation is performed under local anesthesia at our Huntington Beach office. For patients with dental anxiety, sedation options are available. The procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes and is done at the same visit as your tooth extraction.

Following surgery, you'll receive detailed aftercare instructions. Soft foods for 2 weeks, avoiding the surgical site during brushing, and taking prescribed or over-the-counter anti-inflammatories as directed manage post-operative discomfort. Most patients return to work within 2–3 days.

Healing is monitored with periodic X-rays. We use 3D CBCT imaging to confirm that sufficient bone has grown before scheduling your implant placement surgery. Don't let someone else's assessment that you "can't have implants" be the final word — schedule a consultation with our prosthodontist for a definitive evaluation.
